The standard describes the contactor as an electromechanical manoeuvring device, generally designed for a high number of operations, with just one idle position which is non-manually activated, capable of making carrying and breaking currents under normal circuit conditions, including overloading and operating conditions.
The force required to close the main contacts which are normally open or to open contacts which are normally closed is supplied by an electromagnet.
